Library Happenings:

The Library is a popular place this summer and many complimentary comments are heard regarding the fine Library Luther is fortunate to have.  Attendance is up with people using the computers or their laptops. June attendance increased by over 200 visits. Books borrowed increased as well. The children’s reading program is in full swing. Over 300 new books have been added to the shelves.  In addition the Cadillac Library donated 30 boxes of books left over from their recent sale. Some will be put on the shelves; others will be saved for the next book sale, possibly in the fall.

Roger’s computer service donations to date total over $7100.  Thanks isn’t a big enough word to cover Roger’s volunteer contribution to the Library.

Winners for the essay writing contest: “Why I love the Luther Library” were announced and are located on the main table along with winning essays.  Prizes were donated by Rich and Virginia Brazaski. Thank you!

In front of the new Library addition is the beautiful new fence with gate and arbor! The new fence makes an attractive gateway to visitors coming from the south and east. Plans call for an interpretive garden and wildflower area and the enclosure will help to ensure safety for the children’s programs held outside. The fence was made possible through a generous grant from the Great Lakes Energy People Fund. Voluntary contributions to this fund by Great Lakes Energy members rounding up their electric bill each month to the next dollar enabled Great Lakes to award more than $1.8 million in grants to charitable and community organizations since 1999. Great Lakes would like to encourage customers to participate in this program in order to continue to award grants to other deserving community organizations.

Barb Stenger, Luther Librarian for the past 10 years, officially retired July 31 and was feted with a party for her retirement send-off. Barb has been the heart of the Library and will be missed. Happy retirement, Barb! Gail Ganger, a Luther resident for 14 years, has been chosen as the new Director and will begin her duties Aug. 9. Good luck in your new position, Gail!

A note from Librarian Barb Stenger: The past 10 years has seen the Luther Library reach its potential of growth, in building size, resources offered and service to the community. These goals have all been accomplished thanks to the support and encouragement of you, the Luther Community. It is now time for me to reach the personal goal of retirement, more time to spend with my family, and friends.  I will miss the staff, Jody, Roger, Carol, Doug and especially the patrons. It has been a pleasure working with people who are dedicated to this library and in maintaining a level of service that has contributed to the success the library enjoys today.  It is with excitement that I look to the future of the Library and welcome Gail Ganger as the new director.  Gail is bringing new energy, enthusiasm and dedication to your library, providing positive leadership for the future.  Thank you for your support and encouragement these past years. I look forward to my retirement and new role as a citizen who loves the library and will continue to promote all activities that will ensure its future success.

Quote:  “You must always be curious.”  Walt Whitman (1819-1892), was known as America’s first “poet of democracy,” a title meant to reflect his ability to write in a singularly American character.
